Apple’s September 2021 Special Event has been scheduled for this upcoming Tuesday, the 14th of September. The event will not feature an audience like last year and will be streamed online to watch. The event has the headline ‘California Streaming’, and you can watch it on Apple’s website.

The September events typically feature new instalments in the iPhone and Apple Watch ranges, with some events featuring fresh iPad models.

iPhone 13

The event is expected to feature new iPhone models, the flagship model being the iPhone 13, as well as its Pro and Pro Max models. A mini version of the iPhone 13, similar to the mini version of the iPhone 12 released back in September 2020 may also feature among the lineup. It is expected that the iPhone 13 models will be similar in design to its predecessor the iPhone 12, with some slight changes including the size and position of the camera bumps on the Pro model. New colours may also be available for the iPhones.

Most of the changes expected with the new iPhones are associated with the Face ID notch and front facing camera. People are expecting that the notch will be reduced in size and that the front speaker will be moved to the top edge of the phone.

As always, the new iPhone models are expected to get performance boosts by increasing the CPU and GPU capabilities and their efficiency. This will be done by Apple’s latest processor, the A15 chip.

The newest iPhone models may also have a bigger battery life, but this increase may be negligible if performance is increased. Rumours have also circulated indicating that the iPhone 13 may have an Always-On display, as well as a 120Hz refresh rate – but this may only be on the Pro models.

Further, the back camera on iPhone 13 may also be improved, to make photography in low light scenarios better.

Apple Watch Series 7

The event could also feature the latest Apple Watch Series 7, with various design changes expected.

Rumours suggest that the Series 7 will join the iPhone 13 in eliminating its curved edges which has been the base of its design since the first Apple Watch in 2015. The Series 7 is rumoured to have a flat edge design much like the new iPhones and it will come in two new size options: 41mm and 45mm. These larger displays will also have its bezels reduced, making the Watch display almost feel edge-to-edge.

Series 7 will also have the latest S7 chip, which, as always, will make the Watch experience feel smoother with faster loading times and reduced latency. If the chip is smaller than the S6, it may also indicate that the latest Apple Watch will be receiving a battery life increase.

An overhaul of the Watch’s wireless connectivity abilities is also expected due to an enhanced version of the U1 ultra-wideband chip.

Other Announcements

AirPods 3 have also been rumoured to be featured at this Apple Event, with sources indicating the design may be similar to that of the AirPods Pro, but with even shorter stems. Rumours suggest the new AirPods may have connection and battery life improvements, but it will not have noise control features such as noise cancellation and transparency like the AirPods Pro have, in order to make them more affordable. Whether these rumours are true we will have to see, but it is unlikely they will feature in this event.

However, one annoucement that is for certain is Apple’s latest operating systems iOS 15, iPadOS 15, watchOS 8 and tvOS 15. Developer and public betas of the softwares are now coming to an end, and it is inevitable that this event will reveal the final version release date to the wider public. It is expected these software upgrades will be available to everyone a few days before the latest iPhones are set to release.

You can watch the upcoming Apple Special Event on many online platforms, including apple.com. The event starts on Tuesday, 14 September at 10am PST (California)/6pm BST (UK).
