Rumours have been emerging that the Prime Minister has been speculating whether or not to demote Rishi Sunak, the current Chancellor. The Prime Minister is said to be ‘furious’ with the leaks.
Details of the PM’s private meeting with senior government aides, which included considerations whether or not to demote Sunak, has been recently leaked. This is in light of recent tensions emerging between Johnson and Sunak over the impact further travel restrictions and quarantine policies would have on the economy.
Johnson continues to say that he was full confidence in Sunak as chancellor, and a No. 10 spokesperson said that there was no plans at the moment for a cabinet reshuffle.
A recent poll conducted signal that Conservative party members have far more confidence in the Chancellor than the Prime Minister himself, according to ConservativeHome.
However, No.10 did not deny that the Prime Minister considered to demote Sunak, with a spokesperson simply saying ‘The Prime Minister and Chancellor have always enjoyed a close and effective working relationship, and will continue to do so.’
Kwasi Kwarteng, the Business Secretary, commented on the matter:
“I happen to think the PM and chancellor get on very well generally. They are both very good … there are always disagreements. There is always going to be a slight creative tension between No. 10 and No. 11. I happen to think this PM and chancellor are working very effectively together.”
Whether the soured relations between the Chancellor and PM resolve behind close doors is anyone’s guess – plus, with Sunak being so popular, demoting him could have devastating consequences on the public outlook of the PM.
