After four years, Apple has discontinued the original HomePod. The HomePod is still available to buy on the Apple Online Store however it comes with a message saying ‘While supplies last’.
The HomePod Mini will continue alongside other existing Apple products with Apple stating to TechCrunch:
“HomePod mini has been a hit since its debut last fall, offering customers amazing sound, an intelligent assistant, and smart home control all for just $99. We are focusing our efforts on HomePod mini.”
It is unclear if Apple will refresh the HomePod lineup at a later date, but as of now the HomePod Mini stands alone in Apple’s smart speaker portfolio.
It is suggested that the original HomePod model has struggled to compete in a crowded smart speaker market, with lower priced alternatives such as Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Nest speakers proving more attractive to the average consumer. Despite HomePod’s superior sound quality, its staggering price tag is simply not justified. Meanwhile, the HomePod Mini’s mere £99 expense has now become Apple’s flagship speaker model due to its increasing popularity. The smaller size, lower price and similar feature set all contribute to the Mini being the more popular option, despite some features which the Mini does lack such as the ability to use the HomePod Mini as Apple TV speakers, a feature which was available on the original HomePod.
